113 (1970) The Grand Prize

Originally run in newspapers as Daily Strips #78 - The Gurk Twins (08 Aug 1960 ~ 29 Oct 1960)

Script: Lee Falk

Art: Wilson McCoy

Summary: Olympics champion Diana is invited to watch the preparations for the Jungle Olympics.

Meanwhile, two disturbers on probation are ordered by Colonel Weeks to act as jungle guides for a butterfly collector. But the troublemakers' new-found discipline is tested to the limits when they stumble upon the unguarded the Phantom Trophy, a magnificent, jewel-filled prize awarded to the winning tribe.
There are some very interesting moments:
  • Attempt to steal the prize
  • Misuse of the Phantom's good sign
  • An opportunity is provided to both thieves winning the prize
  • Finally, they understand their limits. :)
It's one of my favorite comic by Falk-McCoy combo.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

It's scanned and edited by USA based Venkitachalam Subramanian. Once while binding, some panels and part of covers were cut, we can understand his pains. Just tried to fix with my limited knowledge of photoshop.

Here are some examples:

All suggestions for improvement are most welcome!!

@Colonel Worobu: what Venkitachalam is doing for fans- without expectation in return - some should learn a lesson.

Fixing is a little time taking process, see myself some faults in fixing, so finding out solutions. What you didn't like, pls say, it'll help a lot to go in right direction.

Keep visiting many more early issues by "honest contributors" are coming.

@Bengali Indrajal Comics: Thanks! However I'm in initial stage. Long way to go getting colours like you.

@praveen: I feel, Venkit's part in this digital comics presentation is much more than mine. Observing & working with him more than 18 months. In fact he is modest.

Here some guys scans others comics, first request HIMSELF to post/clean. As one does, behaves like king.

So credits go to venkit.

I have physical copy of this indrajal with me. I have also seen all the previous versions of this very comic posted on net before. And by witnessing all those issues, I was convinced that the printing of this issue was not of good standard, that's why all those was bad prints to read.

But after looking this cleaned and edited version by Venkit+Prabhat, now I really marvel at the dedication of the mentioned persons and at the amount of work it must have taken to bring it to its present state.

Kudos to both of you.

As far as photoshop is concerned, no one can really claim to be a master of this giant graphical software. Those who work on this, call themselves learners only. There is always so much to learn. More one work on this, more things are discovered.

Having used it myself, I can confidently say that it must have taken much time and effort to fix the kind of shortcomings this copy was having. No ordinary effort can produce such result.

@TPH: Glad to know you also liked, so the attempt was not gone in vain.

I've many issues (mostly in Hindi), but this one never had. Agree, there are many early issues could be better.

As today the printing cost of one B&W is approx 0.4-0.6 rs/page. Very soon digital laser colour printing price will fall. Who are not ready to take these vintage comics at rate of gold, one day could enjoy printing. It's my one of goals in this round of IJC posting.

About Vishal: He is new discovery indeed. Hoping he would be able to use his energy in right direction & would serve the community SELFLESSLY for long period. In initial stage we should help. The future will depends what he'll do.

Such a monumental effort, is clearly visible by the telling effect at which the torn pages are reworked, including the letterings, and the cover which now looks almost in mint condition.

Thanks for all the effort guys, you keep reminding me that I have to pick up a lot in my Photoshop etiquettes :)
